Foods of the Forum

There is certainly very little that is not traded or sold in the Forum, but here's a list of the more popular foodstuffs that have been bought and sold by the vendors here in the Forum. A more expansive list by individual vendor is forthcoming.

Coffee has become quite the rage through the empire, flowing from Xalambe's higher regions to the Eastern Empire and all the way through the Trade Routes into Remia.

Wine is also sold in the forum, in all manners and all kinds. Most of the wines sold there are produced by local merchants, and are generally watered down. Beer is also sold, but is considered 'vulgar' in Remian society.

Meat is a big part of the Remian diet, with pork being the most popular food available, as pigs and wild boar provided better meat than cattle. Geese, duck, chicken, rabbits, hares, and even ostriches are raised for Remian consumption. Sausage, called lucanica, is the most plentiful recipe for meat in the Empire. Fish is also quite plentiful, as Remia is a port town. The goatfish, or mullus, is considered the most fashionable fish.

Fruits such as apples and grapes are commonplace, and would be sold by a farmer right from the back of his wagon or by the barrel by a wholesaler. Grapes are the most popular and common, as the local climate produced grapes most readily. Figs, dates, pomegranates, quinces, various types of apples, apricots, peaches, cherries, pears, plums, currants, strawberries, blackberries, medlars, elderberries, mulberries, azaroles and melons are also sold.

Nuts would be sold either stock or in mixes with dried fruits like raisins. Pine nuts, walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, and chestnuts.
